Package Description
The HF-90 HF Portable Package is a portable HF SSB radio communication system, incorporating the HF-90 Transceiver (A detailed description of this product, together with technical specifications, is provided on a separate brochure).
This package is designed for applications where the operator requires reliable long distance communications in a compact portable format. It is simple to use and fully self contained, incorporating its own rechargeable battery system and a simple roll-out antenna for rapid deployment. The package may be supplied either in a rugged hard carry case or in a canvas backpack. The Q-MAC HF-90 Portable Package can be easily converted to a Manpack or Vehicle Package with the addition of appropriate accessories.
The Q-MAC HF-90 Portable Package is being used worldwide in a variety of applications including; international aid projects, mineral exploration, search and rescue, conservation and wildlife, forestry management and remote area 4WD use.
Standard Package Contents
- HF-90 HF SSB Transceiver - Supplied complete with fist microphone.
- HF Portable Broadband Antenna – Roll-out broadband antenna, 2-30MHz, now made of plasticcoated wire (insulated). Supplied complete with 5m coaxial cable, throw cord, earth stake, counterpoise and earth clip. Antenna is supplied on a shuttle for easy deployment and storage. Please refer to information on the reverse of this brochure concerning “Antenna Deployment”.
- Rechargeable Battery - Maintenance-free, sealed lead acid gel battery 7Ah. Supplied complete with DC power cable, incorporating connector for charging devices, and battery condition monitor. Please refer to information on the reverse of this brochure concerning “Battery Use”.
- Hard Carry Case (320h x 275w x 205d) - Custom designed water resistant carry case, with reinforced compartments to house the HF-90 and its accessories. Supplied with an external mount speaker rivetted under the lid. This case is floatable and is ideally suited to heavy duty applications. It is available in grey or alternative colour (upon request). Total weight of package supplied in the hard carry case is approximately 7.5kg.
- HF-90 Operation and Installation Guide. This booklet provides comprehensive instruction on how to operate the HF-90 Transceiver.
- Quick Reference Guide. This card provides concise instruction on how to best use the equipment provided with the package and make basic radio calls.

- Frequency Hopping. Provides military grade secure intercept and jam resistant communications
Battery Use
The Rechargeable Battery provided with this package has a 7Ah capacity. This battery will provide, on average, around 10 hours of operation to the HF- 90 Transceiver (based on a standard duty cycle of 10% transmit and 90% receive/standby).
Q-MAC also supplies a range of charging cables/devices to suit specific applications (including AC mains chargers, DC chargers and solar chargers). These can be purchased separately.
Antenna Deployment
The Portable Broadband HF Antenna is a roll-out type antenna which is end-fed (ie. it has the coaxial feed point at one end of the antenna). By virtue of this construction, it is very simple to deploy, requiring only one mounting point (such as a tree or fence post). The antenna is mounted as high as possible at one end and grounded to earth at the other end. Total length of the radiating section of the antenna is 16m. Typical deployment time is less than 10 minutes.
In very dry conditions, where there are no trees or fence posts, the Portable Broadband Antenna can simply be stretched out along the ground.
